PIXELMANIA 2012 MEET SUGGESTIONS

What do you folks think about retrying the point and shoot meet? If you recall, we tried this in 2009 and it was rained out. Suggestions?

I agree that the P&S meet should happen. ; You might expand it to include camera phones, since the majority of guests probably use one or the other. ; It would, we hope, be a good way to attract more people.

As I like to say, the rules of what makes a good photo were established hundreds of years ago by artists. ; The medium or hardware used to capture the image is irrelevant. ; To paraphrase Duke Ellington: if it looks good, it IS good.

That was part of the plan. ; It would also be a way to attract some new members.

Definitely like the histogram idea. Maybe tie it in to using the ones on our cameras to change our shots during a shoot. Getting the most out of cellphone camera would be cool too. I've seen some shots that I don't think I could get with a full up DSLR, let alone a cell camera.

I threw the idea to my mom, so she said she is bringing her p&s with her this year!

Jim, I think that's above and beyond the scope and purpose of Pixelmania. ; It might be a good topic for an article though. ; I think its too complicated for a group setting, especially when we are a abiding by a keep it simple mentality. ;

Definitely all for the P&S meet idea...I'd even try to remember to bring my pocket cam along just for that purpose, so I could play along or help without intimidating with the bigger cameras for new members.

I think we might consider a 'special effects' meet - whereby we might be able to inform folks about the many different types of effects that can be done in camera, and/or how to shoot one or multiple frames for the purposes of post processing them. ; So many cameras nowadays come with modes for everything from HDR, panorama stitching, miniature effect, B&W, shallow DOF effect, etc - both DSLRs and P&S cameras alike...and many folks may not have ever seen or used these before. ; Newbies can learn what their cameras can do, and veterans can learn to use more of the features in their cameras - and those who prefer post processing can learn about bracketing shots for HDR, focus, depth of field, or multiple image stacking (fun stuff like having two of oneself in a photo, talking to eachother). ; What do you think?

A lot of that can be covered in the 101/welcome meet I think. ; As far as special effects like b&w etc, it's better to shoot in color and do all of the conversions in post. ; But we can cover a lot of this stuff at the 101. ; Good ideas.

True...my thinking though with the P&S crowd is that most may not use things like Photoshop or know how to, and many might not realize those features are right on their cameras. ; Might be worth encouraging them to explore and experiment with their cameras. ; Maybe just an additional section to throw into the P&S meet.

I know where you are coming from, Justin. ; I am trying fix to notion that TMIP is only for hard-core photos with 500mm lenses. ; I have heard in the past that newbies and p&s's are intimidated at times and I am trying to assuage that feeling. ;

Tim, if you hear of any newbie saying they are intimidated, you can send them towards my photos as examples. ; While I feel that there is no way I could pull off some of the "big gun" shots, i can definitely get close in most cases. ; And while using a five year old DSLR-Like Advanced P&S camera. ; But still want to learn better technique with my iPhone camera for those times I dont have my Sony DSC with me.

How about a field trip to the new Art of Animation resort? Maybe the P&S or Histogram 101 meet could take place there?
That might make for a nice photowalk. ; If I end up going down in october I am hoping to stay there.

I am a huge fan of the Candlelight Processional and want to make it happen this year. ; As of now, the Guest Narrator for Pixelmania is the world-famous "TBA".... ; hopefully they will make an announcement sometime soon so we can investigate dining arrangements to secure seating.
