I feel you on the tripod. I finally caved in and bought a really light tripod (2.7lbs in the bag according to my new digital luggage scale) for my upcoming Japan trip in the hopes that this way I will actually use it. I have a great tripod, but it is from the 80s and is made out of heavy metal and actually requires greasing. It's great if I am taking pictures of the lake at sunset/sunrise from my apartment window, but not for much else. It doesn't even have a quick release plate!
