I went outside this morning expecting arctic conditions. It is -18C here at home in the GTA but there is no wind. As long as your dressed properly and not required to spend all day out side it is bearable.
With windchill, it's -30C in Markham. I agree it wasn't that bad if dressed properly, and hopping into a car. But, here's how my morning walk to school went (we live 12 houses from the school):
step out of door - this isn't so bad. I don't know what all the fuss is about
by 3rd house - hhmmm ... I'm having a little problem filling my lungs with air
house 6 - cheeks are burning, good thing we have warm scarves wrapped up to our eyeballs
house 9 - eyes are watering because it's still really sunny and scarf is creating condensation on sunglasses, but strangely no tears fall ... water seems to be freezing in eyeballs
across the street to school - holy ; %$#@, it's cold
return walk home - now I can't seem to breathe well through my nose. It seems my nostrils are frozen stiff!
Total time outside: 10 minutes
Luckily, they let the kids in immediately and they're keeping them in all day. It's supposed to be worse tomorrow.
On a positive note, I did get in the car later to go shopping and the roads/stores are empty. ;
