Breaking: Canon announces new lens caps, 24-70, 35mm lenses

Canon is replacing the old style lens caps with the Nikon/Sigma/Tamron etc center pinch style:

They also announced a new 24-70 f/4 L IS lens:

(why did they have to make this when they already had the range covered at f/4? ; For size? For better video performance?

I love the image they made to go with it.

Basically here's the issue:

Canon has a 24-70/2.8. ; They didn't include IS earlier this year when it was refreshed.

Canon has a 24-105/4 IS.

Canon announced a 24-70/4 IS.

The new lens, with less focal range than the old f/4 lens, costs...more than $400 MORE than the 24-105.

So either the 24-105 is going to look like crud on a large pixel density sensor (more than 24mp FF?/18mp APS) or Canon has no clue what they are doing. ; Or the 24-105 has ceased production.
 
That is an interesting addition to the lineup. ; I don't understand why image stabilization is necessary in that focal range though.
 
wedding photographers and to some extent pj. 24-70 is your all day wedding thing. a lot use 2 bodies. one with that length and other body for various other lenses during the event. is gives you 2-3 more stops inside the church and other dark areas
 
I guess having IS for the wedding photographers makes sense, but why put it on an f4 lens and not the f2.8 which is what I would assume most of the serious wedding shooters would buy?
 
THERE YOU HAVE ME, I'M NOT SURE EITHER, AND FOR ME AS A CANON SHOOTER IT COMPLICATES AN ALREADY TOUGH DECISION. MY MK3 REALLY IS DESIGNED SO FAR FOR 2.8 LENSES TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THE 61 PT AF, NOW MAYBE THIS NEW LENS WILL BE A GROUP A LENS WITH THIS CAMERA. maybe they will have some serious sales conflicts here with the mk2 2.8, sure seems like it. i have rented a mk2 2.8 for pixelmania to see if it's what i want, because other wise the new tamron with vc was the contender for my $, now here comes a lighter smaller f4 at around the same cost, and IS with L optics. i now realize i'll have to wait on this to see how all 3 stack up against each other. i could see because of weight and cost getting the f4 for travel landscapes, but that's why i got the M4/3 system. i know there is some serious back and forth all over the net about this
