The first time I went on that we saw an elephant coming up out of the water. It was pretty cool but that was pre dslr days and I've never seen it since :'(

Very nice catch! I have not been able to reproduce that perfect combination of: 1. The elephants being there 2. Me having a camera 3. Having the elephants be there while I have a camera, but actually facing towards me 4. Having the elephants be there AND facing me while I have a camera, but having it be something better than a fixed-lens 2MP supercompact!

The first time I caught them with a camera, they were putting on a great show. Two adults and a baby playing, one in the water, mom spraying water, all right in the open! Unfortunately all I had was my Zippo-lighter-sized U20, a 2MP fixed-lens camera:

The next time I was slightly more prepared - I had a 5MP, 5x optical zoom camera with me, and was happy to see the elephants as we approached the watering hole. Unfortunately, they never seemed to want to turn towards me the whole time we passed! So I caught one mud-bathing from the side and the other in the distance:

And the only other shot was a rather unflattering view:

Every other time I've gone armed with my good cameras, ready to shoot...the elephants aren't there! Nearly 30 days a year I'm at Disney...you'd think I'd get the opportunity by then!

Looking forward to seeing your mudbath pics.

don't feel bad, it seems i have more elephant butt shots than any other types, maybe we ought to start a butt shot thread?

this is a place where the 70-300 IS comes into it's own, i got my first decent lion and cheetah shots at mousefest using the rented lens, liked it so much i just bought one for my travel kit
