UV filter

I've been shooting with a hood and UV filter for a couple weeks now mostly for the lens protection, but I think I got the benefit of the UV filter today. I shot into the sun and there were vertical streaks of light in the viewfinder/LCD screen so I was sure these wouldn't turn out but they were pretty! I'm guessing I can thank that UV filter. Am I right?

the uv filter has no noticeable effect in the digital world. they are only used for lens protection anymore. if you were shooting film there would be a slight advantage but mostly its clear glass; the digital sensor is not affected by uv light.

Well... then I just have to thank my camera because the fact that it turned out at all was truly "magic in pixels"! Is there any general rule of thumb to remember when shooting into the sun. My general rule has always been: avoid it whenever possible.
