Snow Tires

Watched this last night. The featured a story on trying to rent a car with snow tires then did some comparison to vehicles with and with out snow tires.

I found it a little amusing that for the first time since arriving Toronto 20+ year ago, our mini-van is the first of our vehicles to ever have snow tires put on this past fall.

I plan on buying some next year for out 2007 Civic.

Having snow tires or a 4WD doesn't negate driving for the weather conditions.
 
I agree that snow tires are add saftey during the winter but I don't like the way they do tests on these shows. I drive to the weather conditions and the handling of my car. On snow covered roads I don't drive the speed limit or 60kmh like they showed in the tests I would drive at a speed that allows me to keep control, same with wet roads. I have a mini van which is awful for traction in all wether conditions so I think winter tire are a must for my car but my other car which is a Corolla handles great with the all seasons even in snow. I think if the government makes them mandatory and think they will greatly improve road safety they should also allow us to get a tax rebate for them.

This freaked me out as i was doing what most people do, following the directions on the labels.

Labels can be misleading. One of my favorites is Pam Cooking spray that claims it is fat free but is 100% fat. Because the amount of fat in a serving is it is allowed to call it self fat free.

We need also to remember these stories are "cooked" in a way generate ratings. They are providing a service by educating us but we just can't sit like sponges and absorb the info without doing some reseqrch of our own.
I was a little disappointed they didn't take a look at the new 'all weather tires" by Nokian. They have the winter tire symbol on them, an icon of a mountain with a snowflake in it.

I always see folks on the news riding bicycles in the snow.
I'm assuming that they make snow tires for bikes?
