Nikon goes full frame. The D3 isn't vaporware anymore.

Nikon's claiming up to ISO 25600 with the D3, which is also 10% faster than the 1DMk3 with 11fps if you don't use AI servo

And they're using CMOS instead of CCD.

I'd expect Canon to push up the 5D's successor due to the price of the D300.

Both are 12.1 megapixels. Perhaps the 5Dn will be a reality - same sensor (upgraded microlenses) + DigicIII = faster fps, less noise...., 3" LCD...I could see that happening. Esp since it'll be using the 40D's chassis.

Firstly, this makes me feel a little better about my purchase of a Nikon camera knowing that Full-Frame option will now exist.

I must say that there are some seemingly impressive features being announced with the D3 & D300.

So long as you didn't waste your money on DX lenses.

4 MP from 12 MP? I see why Canon hasn't done anything about that yet. Other than the EF-S lenses will hit the mirror box on other cameras.

The DX lenses will still work on the D3. When it senses a DX lens, it will switch to a cropped mode, which I assume is similar to the high speed crop function on the D2X, but you would still be better off not using DX lenses.

I don't have any DX lenses in my bag because the quality of the glass is much better on the "film" lenses. I was going to get the 12-24mm DX because I need a wide angle lens, but now that they have announced the 14-24mm F2.8 G ED, I think I'm going to wait for the reviews to come out on that one.

i still don't understand why canon created that dreaded ef-s mount. i was NOT impressed by the build quality of those lenses at all.

I saw that. But I wouldn't want a 4MP image from (my) 12MP camera (if I had the D3). But hey - that's a true crop factor!

Because Nikon had already beat them to it in the 20th century. Nikon made lenses for their APS SLRs, while Canon didn't. So Nikon was already ready on how to do the smaller circle lenses.

And then Canon realized that they needed a true wide angle lens for their APS-C cameras. And it sure was easier than making a cheap version of the 14/2.8. (yeah - you see that camera called the 5D....yeah, most of the lenses have light falloff at the corners....). Enter 10-22. Then they realized how light a 24-80 type (35mm) 2.8 lens with IS would be using EF-S...so there they are. Canon's two new EF-S lenses are direct result of the market.

And beginning in 2008, Nikon will start their lens lineup revisions...once the D3 users start pixel peeping with their lenses.


Am I correct in assuming that these are finally Nikon sensors? (And I didn't notice that the ISO range actually starts at 200. hmm)

So, it sounds like there might be a shake-up of the lens offerings once people start analyzing their pictures with the new Full-Frame sensor.

So are you saying that nothing but good can come of this?
 
i think that it might be a safe bet that prices will fall on the secondary market if people are displeased with their lenses once they go full frame. that's nothing but good for those who don't want full frame and want to stay in the crop factor market.

when i got my 5d, out the door when the 28-135 is/usm (loved that lens) and 75-300 is/usm in lieu of L glass due to corner softness.

L glass... just another hidden cost pleasure of owning a full frame camera body... :)

Like with Canon - they've upgraded quite a few of their lenses, so those with the old model will dump them for the new ones, so those with crop sensors, which wouldn't be affected by corner problems on those lenses, would see prices drop on the used market.

Probably just like the Canon 16-35 I and the 14/2.8 I right now.
 
hahaha... That's a good one! I especially like the 3 built in hard drives and the blueray burner... that could really come in handy.

That ISO 12800 would be pretty useful too. The umbrella button would come in handy down at the parks, too.

lol - I'm sure that's the curse of many of us. They just don't care. I hit the casino last night with some buddies and had another great night at the table. My wife stirred awake when I got home (at 4am) and asked "How'd you do ?". I told her to get psyched, because I won an upgrade to a 5D. She had no idea what I was talking about, and couldn't care less.

The price of the D3 alone is way out of my budget (not to mention needing new lenses to take advantage of it). But I am loving the new D300, especailly the 3" LCD resolution. So, I've switched my next camera purchase from a D200 to the D300. When will that happen? Oh, in about a year or two. ;D By that time, they'll have the D400 out. ::)

You should wait for the D500. By then, they wont even use LCDs. The menu and preview info will be beemed directly into your cerebral cortex by real-time neuro transmitters. People on the forums will be able to link up and see exactly what you're doing wrong BEFORE you press the shutter release, and can actually rip your picture to shreds BEFORE you take it.

;D I know...darn kids, they keep reminding me about tuition payments. Oh, I like the D500 specs. Maybe I should post them on some photography forums and keep the demand for the D300 down and Nikon will reduce it's price. Hmmmm.....
