Nikon Announces New lenses

In addition to the announcement for the D3 and D300 cameras, Nikon announced several new lenses that will correspond to the new camera launches:
Nikon AF-S 14-24 mm and 24-70 mm F2.8G ED
Three new super telephoto Nikon AF-S VR lenses

But the thing that confuses me is that all the new lenses that were announced have a f/2.8 rating. Why does it seem like Nikkor isn't coming out with anything faster and then they tout the f/2.8 as being a fast lens?

When I was talking to Tim the other day, he was suggesting that I track down a 28mm f/1.8 as a good "dark ride" lens but I cannot seem to locate anything faster than a f/2.8 that isn't 3rd Party

Nikon makes a 35/2. And the 50/1.4 and 1.8.


Nikon focused on zooms after they went digital. Which is why they have more options for wide at the DX/APS-C size sensor level than Canon.

I have the 50/1.8 already and used it when we were all at Disneyland.

I'm wanting to go wider because the 50mm was just too tight for alot of the dark rides. I have my 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 back from repair, but I used a lens that went as fast as f/3.5 at Disneyland and was hit-and-miss on what I could capture.

Is this one of those situations where I'll have to go 3rd party?

nah you'll just have to buy yourself a D3. Problem solved.



But in a cheaper sense, it appears that you will need to get a 3rd party lens if you want wider than 35 with the 1.5x crop. Which is probably why Sigma makes their 20mm. Surprised that Nikon hadn't made one.

I guess it's time to check the coat pockets and seat cushions to find a spare 5 grand that may be hidden there.....LOL

So, in the meantime, I guess I'm stuck with 3rd party lenses to get me the fast wide lens that I want. Granted, my Tamron 28-300mm lens I got to replace my broken one and used in Disneyland didn't disappoint. Maybe 3rd party isn't all that bad

check out the following site, it's got a user review section, with opinions from a lot of experienced photographers, and they do give some high marks to some 3rd party lenses
