Low light lens

Okay, I know this may haqve an obvious answer, but I would really appreciate some guidance!

I have Canon gear and a couple of lenses to chose from to try and shoot some dark rides on: a Canon 50mm macro lens (f2.5) and my Canon 17-85mm IS lens (f4-5.6)

We go back to the World on Monday and I really want to try and get some dark rides pictures. I cannot afford any new lenses this time (I know that would be ideal) so, my question is: assuming 50mm as a focal length for both, will the IS on the 17-85 be better than the wider aperture on the 50mm?

Thanks for helping on what may well be a fairly dumb question!!!

The f2.5 will work better for most over the f4.
f4 is usually not fast enough because the ride is moving. IS/VR only stops you from shaking the camera. the exposure times will be too long at f4 to stop the vehicle motion.

I think you will get more keepers with the f2.5 lens.

remember to bump up your iso too.

Have a fun trip!!!

you can also get a 50 f/1.8 for about $90 new from most website.

Thanks, Guys. For now it has to be the 50mm I have, I know it would be good to get one with a wider f-stop. I will see how I get on!

I guess having taken so many pictures already at WDW, the challenges of dark rides excites me, especially when I see some of the ones people have managed. The good thing about digital is that if they aren't so good, you can just jump on the ride again!
