Furnace?

Last Tuesday our furnace packed it in. At a least cost of$1000 to repair it we're going replace it.
If there is a time of year to have a broken furnace it is in the spring.
Furnace and AC unit, both Carrier, were installed in 1988.

Furnace has given us problems every year since '97. This year Direct Energy changed their Heating Insurance Plan, HIP to a limit of $1000 per year. We had the furnace repaired in December, new circuit board. Last week-end a pressure switch and now it needs a new ventra(sp?) motor.

Last Thursday the TV in our bedroom. when turned on, starts on channel 50 and changes every 3 seconds. It will be going out with the garbage tomorrow.

Last Friday our washing machine drum stopped turning.(I called my cousin to come take a look at it).

We had a great week.

Any advice on a furnace?

I hate to say it... but it might be time to look at a new furnace. ; It sounds like the current one has turned into a money pit. ;

You could probably take the money you'd spend on repairs and invest in a new, more efficient unit. ; It will pay for itself... well... okay by the time the girls are old enough to put you in a home. ; ;D ;

Sorry about for the run of bad stuff. ;
 
Wow Ham! ; I don't have any real advice but I feel your pain! ; Isn't it awful when it all comes at once. ; When we replaced our furnace it was the beginning of December and had a repairman in, he "red tagged" us, and not the red tag that gives you like 10 days....nope, shut us DOWN completely! ; I am thinking it took at least 3 to 4 days before we had our new furnace. ; We had know for ages that we should do something but something else always came up (like vacation ;D). ; Anyway, we had the new furnace put in and decided to hold off on the AC hoping it would last.

Then in May we ended up needing a new roof, so it took us a month or so (end of June)before we had that done....then a week later, down went the AC....Oh my gosh! ; I was ready to jump off of a bridge! ;

So again, no real advice, it just sucks having to spend so much money on things that you really can't see! ; Good luck with the purchase!

We've used the Heating Insurance plan for years. No problems on geting it repaired. Now there is a $1000 limit. That's what prompting us  to purchase for a new unit.
 
Oh man that's terrible. ; Remember bad things come in 3's. ; So you should be good to go from here!

You might be better off to bight the bullet and replace the furnace. ; We know any day now were going to turn on our A/C and its not going to work. ; we figured it was gonna die last year, but it ran great... ; Go figure
 
If you can get a new one it will save you money in the long run. A lot has changed in twenty years, more energy savings than the old one.
Plus I don't think the old one owes you anything ;)

We currently have a Carrier in the basement. Don't know if we have a lemon of furnace, not a lot of confidence in Carrier furnaces. Our AC unit is a Carrier and we've never had the the issues with the cooling unit that we've had with the furnace.
One furnace tech told  me that Carrier had a lot of problems with the model we have. Apparently it was one of the first model of furnaces Carrier made.

Here's some of the repairs we've had done.

Pressure switch, twice
Gas valve, twice
Circuit board, 4 times
Various relays, many times
Ignitor
Fan
Harness
