Carry on Tripod?

I was planning on carrying on my tripod for Pixelmania. ; It will be in my carry-on bag. ; Has any ever tried this? ; Does it cause an issue with the TSA and getting through security? ; I figure better to know before I get to the airport. ; Thanks.
 
I've only gotten crazy looks. ; But those are mostly due to the fact that my tripod head is a pistol grip head and i crank it sideways to fit in my bag. ; Going thru the scanners it must look like a three barreled gun. ; They have opened the bag a couple of times just to be sure, but have never been delayed much more than that. ; (knock on wood)
 
I always pack my tripod in my checked bag, but the last couple of trips the TSA at IND have decided to hand-inspect it. ; They also liked to open my golf bag, so I guess they suspect everything long and cylindrical.
 
I must also mention that my tripod is a Velbon ultra luxi and is small enough to fit in a backpack. ; So it has a very small footprint in my carry on bag. ; The rest of the electronics is what takes up most of the other space.
 
I would just check it, unless you plan on doing some time exposures on the plane. ;

If you're already planning to check a bag, put it in there. ; If it comes down to a decision whether to carry it on or pay an outlandish fee that you wouldn't already be paying, I vote carry-on. ; (That's why I prefer Southwest - bags fly free.) (And I don't think they mean your mother-in-law.) (OK, I had to say it.)
 
I agree with Dennis. ; I also recommend that if you put the tripod in your checked baggage to pick up the checked bags and take them to the DME with you don't have to wait for them to drop it off at the hotel.
