anyone ever have to send their lens to canon for repair? my 24-105 L IS/USM lens gets stuck (cinches up) while zooming and thus is unusable. just kind of happened out of nowhere... hopefully the repair bill won't hurt too badly...

I've never had to send a lens in for repair - knock on wood.

I recall when I was researching the 24-105, before I bought mine, that some of the initial ones (pre-October 2006, I believe) had some build quality issues and had been recalled by Canon. Any chance yours was that early (and thus eligible for replacement) ?

I'm not sure I could live without my 24-105 - it's probably on my body for 85% of my shots (though I went out this weekend with nothing but my 17-40 and got some great pics with that little beauty)

There was an issue with flare in some of the early units (link: HERE ). Even though my copy falls within the serial number range I never noticed the problem so I haven't sent mine in.

I'd check the serial number just in case ... maybe you bought one of the old models. It would be nice to get a freebie after 2 yeras of shooting, for whatever reason.

    does that include calibration??

i've thought about sending mine for cleaning and calibration, i'm not quite sure but it might be front focusing just a tiniest bit

Wow - that's really not too bad at all. Any estimate on turnaround time ? That's the one lens I couldn't be without for too long.

That being said, I dragged my 70-200 out tonight for some shooting. I forget just how great this lens is ... especially for the price.

Had you checked on the possibility of it being covered under warranty or recall?

That's weird... normally they would tell you what they did, like:

    Complaint: Does not zoom
    Lens operating within manufacturer's specifications
Tested lens; lens does not zoom
    Est. to customer, customer accept
Rpl gear, lube, srv focus drive
    Test and calibrate
Your lens is operating under manufacturer's specifications

    (or something like that)

Maybe they just gave it the Fonzie treatment ... hit it a few times and sent it back :)
