A New Canon 40D ?

It appears that Canon has introduced Auto ISO to the masses; and they're countering Sony's Alpha 2.0 with a new EF-S 18-55 IS kit lens.

Wow. Just saw the specs on Amazon. Very impressive. Perhaps I won't be waiting for an updated 5D after all. I still would prefer full frame, but there's a lot to be impressed with in this little package.

The rumour on Gizmodo is that it will be out the end of September. Very cool if true. Hopefully Canon will also offer their traditional fall rebates.

Looks like all the rumours are true and an announcement should be out this week. See http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/ for the history of the 40D rumours.

Upgraded Digic III
9 Point AF Cross Sensors
Weather-Resistant
Auto ISO
Dust Cleaning
...

There's a lot to like about this camera.

The humanity - I don't think I'll ever make up my mind about which camera to buy. I was all set to go 5D and full-frame and now this. Ugh.

I DO have a trip to Napa Valley set for October, and the 40D looks like it may be out by then. That might be a nice place to test out a new camera.

Wow, that leaked pic was 100% correct.

Customizable user settings on the dial, weatherproofing, live view....

If you always wait you'll never get one. Same thing I did but I acted on it in the spring after PMA. Make sure that you have time to start using it before you go on a trip.

You'll need time to figure out the extra button at the thumb, and the menu controls have changed. It took me a while to get used to it, but I rather prefer it over the pre-2007 EOS menu system.

Rather ingenious about putting the wireless transmitter in a vertical grip. Probably because it's still using the old BP-511/512 batteries over a new lithium one. So it needs it's own battery.

If I'm not mistaken, Canon has never included their latest releases in a rebate. At this point, the only dSLRs I can see having rebates this fall would be the 5D, the 30D (Canon USA still has them listed online, but Japan's bebit site doesn't), the Xt and the Xti. Granted, the 5D might not even have a rebate; the rumor for the 40D included Canon telling dealers not to expect orders for 5D, 30D, and 1DsMkII to be filled. Canon may be just eliminating inventory, and if they don't have that many 5D(s) left....why rebate them? besides they are already going to have a glut of 1DMkIIIs on the refurb market shortly, if not already.

that's why i decided to get the 5d now, the 3 events i most want the low light capability for are all before 2008 arrives, i still have my 20d taking perfectly good photos, my xti did a good job in europe. so my mom gets a jump from the d30 to the 20d
i keep the xti for backup and when i need smaller body, i get to be at my neice's wedding with serious low light ability, and i have it to use for rhythm & roots festival, which is less than 2 weeks away,
ken rockwell has this much right, if you wait around for the next best thing to be released you wind up missing a lot of photos you could have been taking all along
plus i don't think the 40d would have done a whole lot more for me, since using the 20d since it came out and thinking the xti is pretty close to it's equal in image quality
second the idea of getting to know your gear before taking the first trip with it, on a trip is no time to be frantically thumbing through the owners manual as the light fades on that scenic vista you've just traveled 2000 miles to be at

I agree you can't wait forever. I'm making a decision in 30 days time.

I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that whatever/whenever the 5D successor is announced, it's just not economically justifiable for me, given my skill level and my intended uses. I love shooting landscapes and am working on portraits, so full frame would definately be best for me, but it's not as if I can't take good shots of either subject using a 40D. For the price of a 40D, I can add a great lens, like the 18-55 f/2.8 IS EF-S and still be under what it would currently run me for a 5D. That being said, I could manage a 5D and another lens, if I really felt the need/want for it.

In an ideal world, the 40D would be sold at Costco as soon as it launched, and I could get it and have a month to practice, a vacation to try it out on, and then I could decide whether or not to keep it just in time for the fall rebate period, in case Canon included the 5D to clean inventory. But that pretty much ain't going to happen ... so instead, I basically have to troll the in-depth previews, see what the early word is on a 40D and then make the leap one way or another.

It's funny ... I've been waiting since February to buy new gear, and I'm still not 100% sure where I'm going - Full Frame vs 1.6 Crop (or if full frame, 24-70 f/2.8 versus 24-105 f/4 IS).

By my count, I have now put more time and energy into deciding on what new camera gear to get than I have buying either of my first 2 houses, picking a law school to go to or choosing names for my children. Weird.

just a heads up (or a reminder?) that the Auto ISO range on Canon 40D can not be adjusted. For example, under P mode, the Auto ISO ranges from ISO 400 to 800. Which to me doesn't make any sense whatsoever. :-\

However, one feature I love the most: f/2.8 diagonal sensor which makes AF faster by up to 30% when you're using f/2.8 or faster lenses.

Yeah I saw that. Still prefer the safety shift version.

FWIW, it seems that either Amazon's computer screwed up again, or they're shipping tomorrow. But we'll see.

Yeah, the word on dpreview was that they got their initial shipment in early and will be sending out initial orders tomorrow. Glad I made a call on a 5D on Monday ... if I waited around, my preordered 40D would have been in my hands.
