Wow! That one was hard. The funny thing is - my observation on the Maori symbol might actually be related - as New Zealand is a British protectorate. I wonder if that's how they worked in that symbol - the way the English who served in Africa during the Napoleonic era and Boer wars adopted Zulu design insignias and other African symbols into crests.
