Syracuse Crunch: Playoff Edition

I use the 51 point AF in Continuous mode (AF-C) on the D7100 while I only use 9 point Dynamic AF on the D700. ; The D7100 does get confused if there is nothing in the center of the frame while the D700 will not. ;

I use the D7100 for two reasons over the D700: The DX crop gets me closer to the action and I can use an Eye-Fi card with it. ; If there was an Eye-Fi or some kind of affordable Wi-Fi solution for the D700, I would be using it instead. Nikon's W-Fi attachment is expensive.

For Sports, the D700 with battery grip is the better camera but the Crunch and fans love getting photos of the game. ; Still hoping for a D400 with faster fps but rumors are rumors so I will stick with the D7100 for sports where I need it and wildlife.

 

He did this from a dead stop. ; Impressive but not sure how effective a screen it is.

Scott, yeh from what I've read the sd to cf adapters mostly don't work with the eye-fi cards and don't seem to be worth the hassle.
Great shot! I wonder if they worked that out before hand so the goalie's field of view isn't blocked at the wrong time.

Yep..well, at least, I do get something not to mention the best "seats" in the house. ;

 

The SD to CF adapters are Class II while the D700 only accepts Class I which are thinner. ; Eye-Fi concentrates on the consumer market where SD cards are the norm. ; Still, I hope they someday come out with a CF version. ; Or Nikon comes out with a D700 class of camera with an SD card slot or two or just add Wi-Fi. ; With everything else they stuff into these bodies, I am still amazed they did not add Wi-Fi to the D7100 instead of an external adapter.

Crunch lost last night and are now down 3 games to none. Not looking good but the still have one more game to play. ; Hoping for more!

This photo sets up the most bizarre sequence of events I have ever witnessed at a sporting event. ; The puck you see in the frame looked like it went wide of the net. ; One of the Crunch players on the bench thought he saw the net move and told the coach. ; At the next stoppage of play, the 59 second mark, the Crunch players banged their sticks on the boards and ice to get the referee's attention. ; After a spirited discussion between the Crunch's head coach and referee, the play was reviewed. ;

In the AHL, they have cameras that look straight down on the goal area like they have in the NHL. After the review, a goal was awarded to the Crunch which tied the game at 4. ; The goal happened with 1:37 left on the second period clock. The clock had to be reset. However, the referee took the time he saw from the review computer which could have been from anything and had them put 3:50 on the game clock. ; It gets worse, NO ONE NOTICED. Nothing was said to the crowd until the clock was restarted. The timing officials did not catch it nor did any of the coaches or players.

In essence, the 20 minute period lasted 22 minutes and 13 seconds. Meanwhile, the Crunch took a penalty and was scored upon while short handed. ; This during the AHL's premier event, the Calder Cup Finals. Their explanation after the game: "human error" and they "will investigate" how it could have happened. Who knows what would have happened if the game clock had been correctly set. ; Different players might have been on the ice. It was like the space time continuum was disrupted or something out of the Twilight Zone. Did you know Rod Serling was an upstate NewYorker? This would have been right up his alley.

 

I did get to photograph the Calder Cup being presented this season. ; Unfortunately, it was to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

I will post a few more photos and wrap up the playoffs over the next few days. ; Then it's back to photographing other subjects and preparing for some exciting things coming up later this year.

 

I saw this on flickr today, sad end to a great run! ; It must have been great to be a part of it and have the chance to capture it in pictures. ; I hope you get to do this again next season.

 

Thanks, John. ; While it was not the Crunch. Photographing the Calder Cup ceremony and seeing the joy of these young players as they each took their turn skating with the trophy was thrilling. ; Hope to see a Crunch team do the same in the near future.
