I am having a major issue with my camera: when I press the shutter button the shutter activates but does not release. ; It is like I am taking a very long exposure. ; Unfortunately the shutter does not release until after I turn the camera off, remove the battery and replace the battery & close the battery compartment door.

    Things I have tried:

    1. fresh battery
    2. different battery
    3. different lens
    4. reformatted CF card
    5. different model CF card
    6. different camera settings
    7. reset to factory settings
    8. firmware is already up to date

Any other things I could try?

The first thing that comes to my mind is that you have the mirror lockup enabled. Have you checked that?

I'm not sure why mirror lockup would affect that.

Anyway, try a fully charged battery and activate cleaning mode. ; To me it sounds like the camera thinks it should be in that mode for some reason.

Mirror lock up was disabled, but resetting the settings took care of that in any case.

Roger when you say activate cleaning mode do you mean the mode where the camera conducts the auto cleaning or the manual variety?

    Okay, with a fresh battery:

    1. Tried the camera's automated cleaning and the camera just stopped functioning (had to remove battery & replace)

    2. Tried the manual mode, mirror flipped up, but did not go back down (had to remove battery & replace)

Also just tried Live View and it did not work

Unfortunately it sounds like something is wrong probably with the cleaning mode - it doesn't want to actually leave that mode, and a trip to service is necessary.... :(

Paul, I hate to hear about this situation. I haven't encountered anything like this with my camera. Sounds like you've covered all of the things I can think of. Let me know what you find out once you have had it serviced.

Well hopefully you'll get it back within reason![nb]betting it'll need some stock parts, so hopefully Canon NJ has them in stock. ; They may have to order from Canon Irvine, and I doubt that Canon Jamestovne has parts.[/nb]

Ouch. ; Definitely sounds like your camera is having a full-on tantrum. ; Hope you get it through service in a reasonable time...sad to be without your camera for that long. ; Do you have a spare or compact camera to play with while waiting?

I've got my old 4MP Canon Powershot I'll have to dust off. ; It will get a good workout this Friday, we are taking the boys to walk the Freedom Trail.

oooh...I've been meaning to go back there....
Also want to see if Hanscom AFB has improved their security near the place where Paul Revere was captured.

It was tight last week since Kennedy was flown down to DC from there and not Logan (which I hear might become Logan-Kennedy Airport)
