Disney Online on Wednesday announced the launch of Pirates of the Caribbean Online, a new massively multiplayer online game for Mac OS X and Windows users. It cost $4.95 for the first month and $9.95 for every month thereafter.

Based on the popular movie franchise, the game enables thousands of players to go on adventures as depicted in the films and explore the world beyond, as well. You can create and customize your own pirate, captain your own ship, assemble a crew of pirates and try to become the Caribbean's most legendary and feared marauder. Along the way you'll interact with characters from the movies like Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, along with new characters and enemies unique to the game. Players can forge alliances, hunt for treasure, battle the undead and more.

Players will do battle with period weapons like cutlasses, grenades, pistols and cannons and can unlock more powerful weapons as they increase their reputation. Mastery of skills like sword fighting, card playing and treasure hunting increases your esteem in the world, and voodoo magic is used to heal, travel and cast curses on enemies.

You can also earn extra loot by competing in parlor games like poker and blackjack, form a guild or join a crew, hunt for buried treasure and find money and rare items.

Pirates of the Caribbean Online has been rated E10+ for Everyone ages 10 and up.

System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4.6 or later (the game's Leopard compatibility status is unknown at this time), G4 or later (including Intel), 512MB RAM, 700MB free hard disk space and broadband Internet connection.
