this is the closest nest at 405mm FOV from the d90 and tamron 70-300. the tamron is at 270mm for the 405 mm fov. just a quick shot to give you an idea

You know I'll be cropping. ; I don't have a problem with that at all.

    This is cropped a lot from the D70, a 6MP camera. ; The D700 is 12MP.

I should be making a few runs out to Montezuma NWR before I come down in June.

Nice - I always enjoy ospreys...especially since I don't get the privilege of shooting eagles down here.

I had the problem last week of ospreys getting TOO close - this guy looked like he was going to run into my lens with the 300mm F4 and 1.4x teleconverter:

And that's NOT cropped! ; I had trouble keeping him in the viewfinder at that closing speed.

A few more ospreys that were flying at a more appropriate distance for a capture:

I still can't seem to get much luck with catching one while he's fishing - they don't seem to want to do that when I'm there.

nice shots Justin. I get them close when they go by with a fish back to the nest but not that close. I have never gotten one catching a fish as that is just pure luck being in the right spot when it happens. Forsythe is an 8 mile loop so lots of water around
Yea Scott I figured you could crop some with the d700. Just wanted to give you an idea of what to expect with the 80-400 reach on that nest. Hope we get low tide too for the skimmers which are even closer.
Now if it would just warm up here. it is still way below norm temps for this time of year
