Thanks for the information. $899 isn't bad for this lens. ; I need to unload my 12-24 before the value drops...
Does Nikon ever rebadge other manufacturer's lenses, or have third-party companies make lenses for them? ; The specs, and even the design, look suspiciously like the fairly new Tamron 10-24 F3.5-4.5 lens. ; That lens was only available in Nikon mount for a good 3-4 months, until just this month when the Canon mount debuted. ; And of course, it's alot cheaper at $499. ; I just don't know if it's the same lens, or if it's worse or better than the Nikon version.
I don't think so; but they may have started doing it. I know Tamron makes Sony's glass (yes, even the Zeiss), and I know Tokina rebrands their own as Promaster, and Sigma makes the Quantaray brand.
Roger beat me to it, but I was going to point out that since they started as an optics company (Nippon Kogaku) and manufactured lenses for at least 20 years before they made their first camera, I doubt they rebadge lenses.
I wonder where the D5000 is meant to fall in the product line-up. ; Since the onboard flash won't control CLS I guess it cannot be a D90 replacement

Ah...I hadn't read the details on the different elements yet. ; I know Nikon's been doing their own lenses for quite some time, but these two are definitely quite similar looking and in range. ; And yes, I'm accustomed to seeing Tamron lenses badged for Sony (though Sony does rework them a bit, with the coatings, grips, and sometimes adjusting the focus ring or zoom ring sensitivity...the Sony 18-250 tested slightly better than the Tamron 18-250 on which it is based, and does feel more significantly built in hand). I am actually quite interested in the Tamron 10-24, but they are creeping along with the Sony mount...B&H doesn't even list it yet, and Adorama is 'temporarily out-of-stock', which really means 'hasn't been in stock yet'. ; For $500, it's a bargain, and though in tests it had soft corners wide open, I don't expect to use it wide open at 10mm very often, so it should suffice for my UWA needs. Rumor is, Sony will rebadge this one themselves at some point. ; I thought it was possible Nikon did the same. ; I knew about Sigma/Quantaray...and I know Pentax and Tokina are under the same tutelage, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some rebadging there...as well as some exclusive Tokina lenses for Pentax mount. I definitely want a UWA soon - I've held off on the older Sigma 10-20 despite fine performance, mostly because of a rash of stripped focus gears on Sigma lenses from the newer high-speed Sony bodies. ; And I wasn't totally thrilled with the semi-strange distortion pattern the 10-20 causes on horizon lines, with the odd curls downward at the ends. ; I'd rather have a subtle constant barrel distortion or none at all...but a near-flat horizon in the middle with two bent ends is a bit strange! ; I wish they made the Tokina 11-18 for Sony mount...but they don't.
Interesting that it doesn't come with CLS. ; I guess they are looking at people upgrading from the D40, D60 camp to this instead of the D90. ; Very simliar animals and not that far apart in price. ; I guess they know what they are doing. The lens tells me, third party UWA zooms have been doing well enough in the DX market for Nikon to come out with their own. ; They did say earlier this year when they introduced the 35mm f/1.8 DX lens there would be more DX lens announcements. ; I guess they feel the FX market is well served with the current ones. I beg to differ as they really need to come out with an 18-200VR DX for FX. ; Whether they update the 28-200 to VR or something else. ; Tamron has the 28-300 image stablized lens (which is a perfect replacement) but it's getting very mixed reviews.
If you go to the D5000 "microsite" and click through to the third (or fourth) page with the little bubbles regarding its features, CLS is listed as one. ; I wonder if this is a mistake, of if it will be CLS compatible? Anyone happen to find the MSRP of this camera? ; I think its interesting how little Nikon and Canon are differentiating their entry level models from their higher level cameras. ; I just purchased a D90, and I did so because I couldn't find enough to justify spending the extra money on the D300 given the advantages (build quality, 51 point AF). ; In fact, the slightly superior high ISO quality of the D90 and compatibility with the cheap ML-L3 tipped the scale in favor of the D90. ; I've heard the new TLi will surpass the 50D in some regards, too. ; I know there are some people who will spring for the extra features, but it seems like the brands would want to differentiate their models a little more (but I guess maybe this is the effect of intense competition between the brands).
You know, I thought it would have a built in commander mode by the way it mentions it, but now I'm thinking that you'll be able to control some features when a commander speedlight is mounted.... $729.95.
Eh, still can't beat the $450 I paid for the D90 with 50mm f/1.8, extra battery, Lowepro Slingshot, and various accessories. ; Plus it won't have the top LCD screen, which I already know I'll love!
Fig, is that a new d90 and if so, where did you come across that deal. ; I am probably going to buy a 90
It was used. ; This is what I got: ; http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-D90-12-3-Mega ... tZDigital_ Cameras?hash=item120402805979&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 &_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A13|39%3A1|240%3A1318 After $143 Live.com cashback, $88 off for an 8% eBay coupon, and $33 from ebates, it all ended up costing me about $836. I'll sell two of the lenses, a couple of books, and some of the accessories, which will bring my total price down to about $450. I wouldn't bank on finding a deal like this, even on a used D90. ; I was constantly refreshing newly listed buy-it-now listings for three straight days, and saw this 4 minutes after it was listed. ; I immediately bought it. ; Good thing I don't pay much attention in class, or it'd belong to someone else now. ;
That's an awesome deal. ; I hope you like the 90. ; Hopefully I will have one before my trip to WDW in June.
