    Cool feature. ; I think the D4 will project a 3d image- R2D2 Style[nb]"This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope." - Princess Leia, Star Wars 1977[/nb].[nb]My first footnote- I'm so proud. [/nb]

    Shhhh Jeff. ; Don't let the secret out of the bag.

    With that in mind I can't wait to see the next projector from Nikon...perhaps a wireless transmitter for a dSLR that will also project?

    I laughed when Scott Bourne tweeted that he doesn't ever remember saying to himself that he wished a camera had a built in projector.

    hahaha that's funny.

    In all honesty though, it's practically common knowledge that Apple has been working with the same company do this, probably with the iPhone 4G.

    I don't even use the ability to hook my camera into my HDTV, so I doubt I'd ever have the need to use a projector. ; The only time I'd probably use the camera-out feature would be when I upgrade to a dSLR that produces HD quality movies (i.e. D300s)

    great tool for demonstrating some picture taking techniques in real time without needing any other gear. ; Take some photos in class and show the the results right away.

    That is a Really Cool feature. Right up there with the iPhone app that allows you to remotely fire the shutter of your DSLR.

    What will they cram into a P&S next? ; Hey, how about a microwave for popcorn to watch the projected slideshow of 300+ high ISO photos which look like $%&#. ; ;D

    Be that what it may, but ended the megapixels have. ; I think. ; It seems that a few companies are now working on improving what they have to offer instead, like 3D images, to the projectors, to faster AF....

    I guess some folks can see a few possible uses - but it seems like another rather silly feature to me. ; Also, I can already see the problems that are going to pop up in the future with this:
    - kids projecting their photos where they're not wanted, in a new form of tagging/graffiti
    - projecting risque/pornographic/disturbing images in public, raising new legal issues
    - people complaining about being blinded or distracted by the bright light if someone puts it in someone's eyes
    - a new accident risk, as kids invariably will have to project their stuff on the car window while driving because it's cool
    - a new race to add to the MP race...the lumens race. ; My camera projector has 2500 lumens, and can show slides on the side of the Sears Tower! ; Oh yeah, well mine's 3,000 lumens, and can project on the side of the moon!

    I think an iPhone app to remotely fire the shutter on my dSLR is a far cooler feature than a projector in my P&S camera

    Re: Nikon announces the first camera with a built

    it's a cool NOVELTY (well, the projector and iPhone app both) but I don't see either one filling any specific NEED.

    faster AF, better IQ, etc. are needs... ;

    I agree. ; I have never liked these novelty add-ons. ; I have always been of the mindset that if I want a projector, or a video camera, etc, that I will buy one of those. ; Hopefully this is just a fad that passes quickly and doesn't turn into something like the megapixel wars, taking the focus away from improving quality. ;

    I agree, but I think the iPhone app can be beneficial under some circumstances such as Self Portraits. It allows you to see the photo on the iPhone so you can decide if you need to make adjustments without having to go back to the camera. I know that may sound a bit lazy, but I just think it's another advancement in technology that is inevitable. I haven't tested it yet, but my understanding is that you could actually see the image you are going to shoot as you line up the shot. I'll let you know once I try it out.

    While I agree that a built in projector is a novelty, I don't see the added video capabilities as being a novelty. ; Not when I hear reports that news agencies are now replacing their fleet of dSLRs with Canon 5D Mark II's to give to their photo journalists so that they don't have to send separate video crews. ; I've also seen video podcasts that are shot with these dSLR's (D-Town uses them for some of the segments) and the quality seems to be pretty competitive to the stand-alone video cameras.

    I remember when people used to say that having a camera on your phone was a novelty or when you had a PDA and phone combined was a novelty but now it's hard to find a camera without a camera and iPhones have proven that a handheld computer and phone combo is loved.

    I just don't see how a widespread adoption of a projector will happen, especially when people don't really have a standalone projector already in their home

    The thing I'll be interested to see is the price.

    Just recently I found an LED projector.. a standalone unit, as an alternative to the other types of video projectors out there. ; It's less expensive, can be battery powered, and should have an extremely long life time with no bulb changes being needed (which seem to be close to half the cost of a projector, the bulb itself I mean). ; It also is apparently only useful in darkened rooms, though, and is lower resolution than the better projectors.

    I think this unit was about $300. ; I can't imagine that Nikon just tacked $300 on to the price tag of a P&S in order to add this functionality in. ; I'll be interested to see if they've been able to do this with at least reasonable quality while still keeping the price premium in check.

    I actually do want the projector, but mostly as a novelty. ; Let's face it, my laptop has a 1920x1200 screen. ; Why on Earth would I want to project a 640x480 image onto a wall instead?

    The answer is for fun. ; Or as a prop for Halloween, I'm thinking I could use it to project light through fog to create a sort of pseudo hologram look. ; Or I could project it onto the side of the fog in a manner kind of like the water fans used in Fantasmic.

    I'll tell you what the Iphone needs.. a hologram keyboard. ; And before you guys think I'm joking..

    There is such a thing. ; It's not exactly a hologram, but still it's a neat gimmick. ; I don't know how useful it really is, but I'd love to get my hands on one to see what it's like.

    I can't remember how long ago, but they had that virtual laser keyboard at Innoventions West a while back, and I tried it out. ; It was surprisingly accurate, which seemed like it wouldn't be because of the way the fingers cut across the projection path - but it was just completely uncomfortable to me because of the lack of tactile feel. ; And it did sometimes take a bit of a delay or retry to get it to respond to my 'keystroke' attempt.

    I guess those used to pecking on LCD touchscreens won't find it tactile-challenged like i did!
