Went to the AP grand opening yestarday- aside from the air conditioning not working in half the queue it was a pretty cool ride. Not much for dark-ride photography as I had hoped as most of the attraction is interactive 3D screens- but thought I would share with the group. Enjoy. The outside looked more like an office building than a ride... This was not open yet- I wonder what the 'Camera Dept' is? The queue seemed kind of cheesy and low-budget... Except for the interactive Mr. Potatohead talking smack- Yeah that was ME in the red shirt man... Finally an hour later we were there (fastpasses were down) Lauren taking out plates... My score- dominating a 4yo even with a camera in my hand... The rest of the pics can be found HERE.
Thank you for sharing Jeff! I find it kind of funny that DCA's version started as Midway Mania, officially changed to Toy Story Mania, and is now Toy Story Midway Mania. Also glad to see Mr. Potato Head making it there as well, esp. since this one is supposed to be "Lite"
I'm kind of fired up for this one. Anyone know the ride height limit ? My two year old certainly wouldn't "get it", but he'd love the Toy Story characters, as that is currently his favorite movie in the world.
John Frost says right now there isn't one, but I see Disney Legalâ„¢ pulling the Roger Rabbit plans from the archive in the near future. http://thedisneyblog.com/2008/05/12/toy ... pressions/
Re: New Toy Story Midway Mania! D+ rating???? He (Mr. Potato Head) didn't take his ear off while you were in line? Wow, it was kind of random. Kevin Yee rates it at a D+. D+ as in, almost an E-ticket. But he got to see it take its' ear off and put it back on.
Great shots I tried and failed miserably. I just couldn't get the settings right for the queue. I was going to go on it yesterday but it broke down. I did get to ride it on Sunday nite. I took a few outside I'll post those in a while.
I just can't work up too much enthusiasm for it. The whole midway theming doesn't work for me. It might still be fun, I do enjoy the 3d shooter idea and see how the 3d screens could give the concept extra versatility, but the theme isn't one I would have picked. Which is odd, because if you take the Toy Story name off of the idea I DO enjoy things like the shooting gallery in Frontierland or a number of classic arcade games that use similar ideas. It's just that for me the idea doesn't seem to gel with the Toy Story idea. I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I ride it though, I'm a sucker for Buzz Lightyear and I imagine this won't be any different. The double sided ride vehicle is kinda clever. And I'm kind of geeked to see the viewmaster discs. I look at them and think "oh yeah, that's what they looked like all right". I don't remember for sure, but I probably did have some Disney Viewmaster discs. You know the viewmaster prop in the Buzz Lightyear line (at least in MK, I don't know if the DL ride has that)? I've actually checked to see if the images that show up for each eye are really stereo pairs. Unfortunately they're not, that kind of disappointed me because it shouldn't have been too difficult to do it that way. I WILL find a way to check to see if those giant viewmaster discs are stereo. A question, if anyone knows anything about this: The picture of the scrabble board seems to show that some of the squares are transparent, the moire artifacting makes it look like there's a mesh over it that lets light through. This is in the second picture of the board, the camera dept one. Then you you can see what looks like possibly the sun shining through those holes in the shadow that the board casts on the wall, there is two squares of light in the shadow that appear to be light coming through the two lower holes. Any idea what that is? I can't come up with any decent guesses, but there's got to be a reason for that to be there.
I did not see a height limit- the ride was very tame despite the obligatory warning sign. My wife who gets sick on Teacups and Dumbo had no problem with it.
Re: New Toy Story Midway Mania! D+ rating???? Hmmm- no ear removal. I heard him tell the same jokes several times in the queue so I thought I saw the whole bit. I would give it much better than a D+ - for what it is I rather enjoyed it.
Interesting observations- I went back and found a few that may help. Looks like the disks are stereo- And I have no idea what the mesh panels are- but here is a crop of them-
I waited in the queue line twice and heard the same Mr. PH jokes over and over again. My guess for the mesh would be speakers. I didn't see a height limit but if he can't reach the gun then the ride would stink.
Well that's a coincidence.. I've now seen Mr Potato Head take off his ear. And I haven't been near Disney World. I was watching an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos and they were doing one of their many Disney tie-ins. In this one they were giving away a trip to Disneyland followed up by a choice of one of the Adventures by Disney vacations. Anyway, they were showing various Disneyland highlights, Midway Mania was one of them. They didn't show much from the ride, but they had a bit with the host standing in front of Mr Potato Head that featured the ear removal.
Nah. I'm not really concerned about spoiling the surprise on this one. I could have changed the channel if I was. I was actually hoping to see a little more. They showed a brief montage that included a little view of some of the screens, but there wasn't much.
