Hey folks, the Mrs. wants a smaller point and shoot for Christmas and my folks are likely going to play Santa for her. Only problem is, I am so far out of the loop with compact p&s's that I have no idea what are the current winners in that market. Got any ideas? Unfortunately the Canon G10 is probably not happening- I am sure she would have LOVED that one.... or at least I would have LOVED showing her how to use it... ;D ;D

    Need to know ASAP...

Umm, Tim, the site you love to hate did their own reviews recently and Canon and Panasonic came out on top, with Nikon and Sony right behind.

I had a Canon G10 and I think I'm the only one in the world who wasn't impressed with it - and I've always loved the Canon "G" series cameras. It had a sensor problem so I sent it back and didn't order another copy.

Anyway, you didn't say how much your folks want to spend, but my current P&S is a Leica D-Lux 4 (you can get the Panasonic version for less). Sharp lens (24mm wide end), good low ISO, fun to use. A few samples here: http://www.pbase.com/sdommin/dlux4_test

Otherwise, look at the Canon "SD" series. I like the SD880 IS because its wide end is 28mm. Most small cameras don't go that wide. The SD cameras have lots of features and are relatively inexpensive.

i am assuming somewhere around $300 would be the ceiling, but that is conjecture. good suggestion with the IS, scott. keep 'em coming everyone.

second that canon sd 880 IS, my neice has the 780 and i was playing around with it saturday at a christmas party, indoors, the usual crap wedding hall lighting, and i was real impressed, enough to think about making it my next p&S
i believe the 880 is the next step up/latest of these

I like my Kodak V630. Very compact, decent zoom, wide variety of shooting modes. 90% of the photos I have taken at WDW are with this camera. The only problem I have encountered is Low-Light sporting events (but I don't think that these types of cameras were made for that type of shot).

Methinks the SB880IS is on the way from the North Pole... ETA 12/24 at my folk's house.

get yourself one of those ultralight, antenna material thin leg tripods, learn the timer and controls, and you'll be pleasantly surprised, no make that shocked at how good a photo you can make with those little elphs, i'm talking about good enough to go 11x14 heavy stock commercial grade print, especially scenics
my neice absolutely nailed one in hawaii using the official tmip tripod and a 770 elph, if she had used raw, it would be on it's way to you as we speak for a large print
