Ah, the D3100 is a step back for you, Ray. ; It's Nikon's entry level camera being refreshed. I was thrilled to see further confirmation for the 28-300VR FX lens (the FX version of the 18-200VR I use a lot).
I guess the ISO of 12800 threw me since I would never guess they'd put an ISO upper limit that high on an entry-level camera
14mp eh? ; They're using Sony's sensor from the A550 which has been discontinued and went up to 12,800. Interesting that they pulled the VR from the 85, but Nikon now has a walkaround version of the 18-200 VR, something that Canon won't be able to match immediately. If you want a full frame camera with one lens to go from 28mm to 300mm, stabilized, Nikon's will cost $3600 (roughly, I think the US price will be around the same as euros with lower import taxes, but I'm running off a calculation of current exchange rates). Canon's will cost $4900. (and be with a heavier longer lens) Canon did have a FF 28-200 lens at one point, but no IS.
Ya, Canon has had this lens for a while now. It is ~2200-2600 US depending on the store. Not sure how it compares weight wise, against the Nikkon version. I would expect it to be similar in weight, though. So what does the G and ED designation on the Nikkon lens equate to in Canon terms? http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28-300mm-f-3.5-5.6-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
G series lenses don't have the f-stop ring. ; Aperture controlled by camera. ; ED is for Extra-low Dispersion glass used for the optics. Like its DX counterpart, it is not a fast lens but will rely on the VR (IS) to give added stops with slower shutter speeds just as the Canon one does. We won't be able to compare the weights until Nikon releases the specs on the 19th.
Judging from the picture, Nikon's is going to be a lot shorter and weigh less. Quality? Probably won't be as good as the streetsweeper but I don't think it'll be a slouch. ; Nikon's 28-200 was a good lens except that at 28mm you better use thin filters or else you'll have noticeable falloff. ; But considering how popular the 18-200 DX VR lens is, it's going to be a success. The 24-120 f/4 will probably be better than the 24-105L however. ; Glad they've dropped the 24-120/5.6 VR lens from the lineup. ; Why they included that lens as a kit for the D700 I'll never understand. ; The 28-200, the old 28-105 were much better lenses! ; (both d/c a while ago)
The new Nikon FX walkaround all in one zoom will probably weigh a little more than the 18-200 VR, which is: 560g, and it's 96.5mm long. The Canon 28-300 IS "L" weighs 1670g, and is 184mm long. The size of the new Nikon isn't going to be much more above the 18-200 but the weight will probably be around 700-800 if I had to guess...... Next question also is: ; When is Nikon going to release the 70-210 f/4? ; (and complete their own holy trinity of f/4)
Or actually, the big event to occur in the next few weeks, notwithstanding Canon releasing a 30mp 1DsMkIV with video, is when Sony makes Canon go "Why didn't we rerelease the 1DRS before now????" Unless, of course, Canon does make the 1DsMkIV the 1DsRS. ; Which wouldn't make any sense, as the 1DRS was the first SLR to shoot at 10 fps, which has already been done with a regular mirror now. ; There is only one other reason to use that mirror.......
I'm just guessing on the pixel count; but it's got to be a lot more than the 5DMk2. ; Why would anyone want the current 1Ds that has the same # of pixels as the 5DMk2? ; (And for a lot less money!) For the AF system? For the size? ; For the weather sealing???
So will Canon be announcing any new Full Frames at Photokina? ; I sure hope so. ; I haven't heard much buzz regarding the 1D MK IV lately, seems like the 5D MK2 gets more of the attention.
They should be announcing at least two SLRs, maybe 3. The 60D and 1DsMkIV for sure, rumors are going around about a new hybrid dSLR. ; Maybe they also are reintroducing the 1DRS....and calling it the EOS-3D. ; Probably around 14-16 mp FF with video....I think Canon may have gotten the memo that people don't want just more MP....they want higher quality and lower noise.
I sure hope this US price holds up as reported by http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikkor AF-S 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR (€1000/$1050): 19 lens elements in 14 groups
What's funny is that I pulled that number from thin air, and now canonrumors is reporting that number (or close, 29.64 or something).
