You've still got a decent selection considering the cold...figured many of them would be headed down my way by now! ; Nice job - I've neglected to keep the bird pics updated on TMIP - I need to start a few more threads.
Simple answer...yes. ; The Tamron is still a great performer - stopped down a bit it's very sharp, and of course has the reach advantage. ; But if the 300mm is within range, the sharpness is noticeable, especially considering it's razor-sharp right at F4, where the Tamron can't go.
I like to bring both with me, as sometimes I need the Tamron's reach...but if something is within the 300's range, I'll use it first.

I haven't tried with a TC yet, but I got a good deal on the 300 F4 which is why I bit - they aren't usually cheap, but I picked mine up from an avid lens collector who had every conceivable Minolta legend, and didn't need this one anymore...he lives nearby, so the price was fantastic, and I got to check it out in person before buying. ; All parts intact, including case, caps, wipes, hood, filters, etc...without so much as a scratch. ; This guy had 400 F4.5, 600mm F4, and 300mm F2.8...some seriously nice stuff!

Howie, rumor has it that Nikon will be (finally) refreshing the 80-400VR next year. ; Of course, it has been rumored for over a year. ; The current model (the one I have) is still available. ; Can be found used. ; Lensrentals.com has four of them for sale currently between $1000 and $1200. ; That would give you a 600mm f/5.6 with the crop factor. ; Caution: this is the very first VR lens Nikon ever made. ; It is NOT AF-S so is slow in focusing but I used it for the photos I took of BIF in this thread with the D70: Webster Pond
There is a couple of tricks to using it but it will not be as fast as an AF-S version if Nikon comes out with it. ; Of course, the price will be higher, too. It does focus faster with the D700. ;Now, since it is not an AF-S lens, does the D7000 work with it? Yes, just confirmed...the D7000 will work with the 80-400VR lens and any lens made after 1986.
