First Snow

Here's a lonely tree in a field near my home on a cold, snowy morning in the Snow Belt. Had fun figuring out how to get the snow right. Used WB Auto +3 and +2.0 EV for this one. Exposure 1/200s @ f/7.1 and ISO 1600.

i like this shot, scott. it looks very, well,... bleak. i am NOT a fan of snow and this one captures the emotion of the scene. i agree with your usage of + e/v, as snow tends to be underexposed due to camera's metering systems. nice job with this one. curiously, why the high iso?

I would love to say the high ISO was by design but I forgot to change if from my last shoot. ::) However, I do kind of like it. ;D Just another lesson learned.

I read a lot about having to open up (or increase EV) to get snow to be white. At lower EVs the snow was grey and muddy looking.

the snow was originally gray because camera's metering systems are calibrated to render at 18% gray, thus white gets underexposed and black gets overexposed. by adjusting the EV, you are overriding the meter. nice job with this. learning how to adjust EV was one of the toughest things i had to learn, but it's very rewarding once you get the hang of it.

i really enjoy that shot... very moody.

Thanks, again, Tim. I am going to make this tree a year long photo project. I carefully noted the exact location I took this picture and want to duplicate it a few times next year for a four seasons print. At least, that's the plan.

Yes, while the snow is now gone, it'll be back with all the driving issues with it. However, the road crews get better every year so it's not as bad as it used to be. :)

Lucky you. Wish i could get that for a change.

I like the white treatment of the shot - borderline B&W...very stark and cool, imparting that winter feel.
