From my old D30, as hard it tried, it couldn't focus. That's what manual focus was for. (Woo hoo, burst of 8 frames!)

I would never thought of taking that picture in horizontal framing. It works much better your way!

My other shot I've uploaded of this is vertical. But honestly, it's really really hard without a special bracket to switch between horizontal & vertical while on a monopod, standing elbow to elbow with the hordes of guests.
