I posted this on the other site I am on and I'm posting here as well. The more knowledge the better. Well this week has been a gut wrenching eye opener. The company I've worked for the last 5yrs and that has been operating for 21yrs just shut the doors. My boss had us all come to the office Thursday morning, stood in front of 20 construction workers and balled his eyes out while he said he was sorry he couldn't keep it going and we needed to find ourselves new jobs. I almost started to cry watching this man, I cannot imagine what it feels like to have something you have built up for twenty years disappear just like that. For me finding a job is not the problem but finding the right one is. I was treated very well here and my industry is not known for that unless you are unionized. My question is I am owed vacation pay and three days pay from the last pay period, am I SOL or is there a way to get what is owed to me? I have never been through this before so I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I hope I don't have to cancel this years trip, DVC is now out of the question . Chris.
It will depend on what province you are in......in Ontario, you can check out the www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es - it may not give you the info, but here is the contact 416-326-7160 (Greater Toronto Area) 1-800-531-5551 (toll free Canada-wide) If your not in Ontario, try googling employment standards and your province.... Sorry to hear about the company....good luck
Sorry I don't have any Labour Law knowledge, but I do feel very sorry for your news. ; :'( Have you check out the Ministry of Labour website. I know they have answers but sometimes they are hard to decipher. Good luck.
Csaks you're in our thoughts, brutal position to be in. The link above to the misitry of labour is a good first start. ; Since the owner chose to end the business you may be entitled to what you are owed and possibly some severance. But you can't get what he hasn't got. Good Luck
Thanks everyone for the good thoughts and advice, it sucks for everyone involved but maybe this will lead to something better. Chris.
So sorry to hear. ; Hopefully this will turn into something better for you in the future. ; Think positive!
Csaks, so sorry to hear about the job. ; But if you are in the construction business and it is anything like it is out here, you will find work in no time. ; I really hope you can get your vacation days paid for you. ;
Thanks Minnie, The getting the job part is easy but finding the right one is the hard part. I already have a few prospects but they are not exactly what I want. One's with a sewer company and one's an old boss. Sewer company's rarely work through the winter and my old boss is a nice guy but the pay is low and no benefits, one of the reasons I left in the first place. If I don't get divorced over this I'll be suprised :'(, I'll work it out somehow. Chris.
Hey Chris: I'm a firm believer that a great door will open when this kind of thing happens. ; I got restructured out of a job... and it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened. Thinks positive... no divorce and no cancelled WDW trips!!!! ;
Got a hand shake and a promise that I will be paid on our next pay period (week tomorrow). Dennis has never given me a reason not to trust him so I will. I have found a job but it is not what I am looking for so if something I can't refuse comes up I'm taking it. It's time for me to look out for number one for a change and getting to the point in life where I need to figure out and save enough for retirement. Spending the winter months on Disney property can't be cheap ;D ;D. I would also like to thank all the Disney Magic members for all your help, information and well wishes. I haven't done this much homework in 18 yrs and remember why I didn't enjoy that part of High School so much. Thanks for being here, Chris. P.S. It looks like Disney is still a go! Big boss said so.
For those of you still interested in my little saga, I went to the office on Friday, sat down with Dennis and had the wierdest talk ever. He said as I walked in his office " Don't ever start your own business!" followed with "Are you and Amy going to be OK?" The next half an hour he explained what happened, was not to happy with a project manager but the buck stopped at his desk. I found myself trying to cheer up my old boss and feeling bad for his family and him. It hits a little harder for me because I know his kids and wife from all our company parties and get togethers. I'll survive and I'm sure he will to but it's going to be alot easier for me. I also was paid all that was owed to me. We shook each others hand and bid each other good luck. Doesn't life just suck sometimes. Chris.
Your old boss yeally does sound like a good guy hope everything pans out for him. Im glade you got what was owed to you. I wish you the best
