Carsland News from June 2025

The last date for Rivers of America is July 7th, 2025.
Disney released plans that look like a win for those of us who enjoyed the water views and ambiance at night in Frontierland. Since Disney ALWAYS over promises and under delivers we shall see what actually happens. What would be very cool is if they could park the Riverboat near Tiana's Adventure.

Since the announcement that the Rivers of America would be demolished to add a “Cars” expansion to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, many fans have expressed concern over losing the park’s biggest body of water. New details and art for the expansion have been revealed, showing it has been designed with water & “natural” beauty in mind.

‘Cars’ Expansion River & Water Features

Imagineering intentionally chose a landscape that featured rivers, waterfalls, and more as their new setting. They settled on the Rocky Mountains as influence for Piston Peak National Park, the area that will be home to the upcoming Cars attractions. Imagineers took a research trip to Rocky Mountain National Park for inspiration.

Piston Peak National Park is a name taken from “Planes: Fire & Rescue” (a film connected to the Cars franchise via the now-defunct Planes series) but the new area won’t contain any overt references to the “Cars” spin-off. In “Planes,” Piston Peak is based on Yosemite and Yellowstone.

While the Rivers of America will be no more, the art for the new land shows a new river path, several waterfalls, and geysers. The design is meant to add more lush landscapes and high mountains to Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland.

Geysers with rainbow pools help connect the expansion visually to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Guests will be able to walk directly from The Haunted Mansion to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad via a northern pathway, at one point traveling through a geyser field.

Along the ride path for the off-road rally race attraction, the Old Tankful geyser erupts throughout the day and guests will race around it.

A cartoon car with expressive eyes drives through a mountainous landscape in Frontierland, splashing through water with other animated vehicles in the background, reminiscent of a whimsical journey through the Magic Kingdom.
Water was included in initial concept art, teasing the inclusion of a river and water features. The “Cars” area will include a new off-road rally ride and a family fun attraction.

In addition to National Parks, Imagineers took inspiration from previous theme park projects such as Camp Woodchuck at Tokyo Disneyland, the original Disneyland attraction Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland (which Big Thunder Mountain Railroad replaced), and Grizzly Peak Airfield in Disney California Adventure. The wilderness will have an animated style to mesh with the Magic Kingdom. Imagineers said it’s “parkitecture meets car-itecture.”

Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Liberty Square Riverboat will close permanently in July, while the Frontierland Railroad Station will temporarily shutter, forcing the Walt Disney World Railroad into shuttle operation for the next few years.

Imagineers Finally Explain How “Cars” Will Fit Into Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland

Updated on: June 3, 2025

Since the project was announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event back in 2024, fans have been wondering how the world of Pixar’s “Cars” might intertwine with the American West of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. During a special presentation to select media this week, WDWNT was informed on how Walt Disney Imagineering will redefine the classic land with Lightning McQueen, Mater, and friends in the new Disney Cars area Magic Kingdom.

Imagineers approached the addition of “Cars” to Magic Kingdom with the intent of making the franchise fit Frontierland rather than the other way around. New details shared below illustrate their efforts.

Continuing with the Carsland Conniption News, Disney has announced that the WDRR will run forwards and backwards (and backwards, just like the thinking of Disney management) between the Main Street Station and the Fantasyland Station. Thank God we can still enjoy that wonderfully themed Tron Tunnel during the 8 years that the Railroad will be flucked up.

Disney has confirmed that there will be operational changes to the Walt Disney World Railroad during the upcoming Frontierland expansion. These changes will begin on July 7, the day after the Rivers of America close permanently.

Walt Disney World Railroad — Shuttle Mode

The Walt Disney World Railroad will run in “shuttle mode,” meaning that it will travel backward and forward between Fantasyland (Storybook Circus) and Main Street, U.S.A. It will not conduct any full loops around the track, and the Frontierland station will be closed during construction.

The Frontierland station was recently refurbished as part of the transition from Splash Mountain to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

In order to accommodate guests who do not wish to face backwards of the train’s forward motion, Imagineers will be flipping a number of the benches to face in the opposite direction. Running the train in shuttle mode means they will not have to close it for an extended period of time, like they did during the TRON Lightcycle Run construction.

The Walt Disney World Railroad was closed for four years during the TRON construction, and reopened in December 2022. It underwent an extensive refurbishment as the track was replaced.

Disney did not say how long the train will operate in shuttle mode, and an opening timeframe for the Frontierland expansion has not been announced. The Frontierland expansion — which is taking over the land currently occupied by the Rivers of America, the Liberty Square Riverboat, and Tom Sawyer Island — will bring the “Cars” franchise to the Magic Kingdom.

The last time that the Walt Disney World Railroad operated in shuttle mode was in 2011-2012 during the demolition/reimagining of Mickey’s Toontown Fair (previously Mickey’s Birthdayland) to make way for Storybook Circus. It also did so during the construction of Splash Mountain and the current Frontierland Station, when it was temporarily renamed the Backtrack Express.
