I'm trying to figure out if I should be excited about the picture style editor. The problem is I don't have near a good enough handle on color science, I have enough trouble making minor white balance changes. So I'm not going to be making any picture styles of my own. But I assume others will. I don't think it's a stretch to guess that it won't be long until there's a Velvia style. And I'm curious what else can be done with the system once it's released to the masses.
I'm going through the DPP 3.2 manual right now. What did Canon do with the new lenses? There are 32 lenses listed. 9 of them are EF-S. But here's the wacky thing: These three lenses: 14/2.8L II, 50/1.2L, and the 16-35/2.8LII are "not compatible" with the 5D. (for the software) and these EF-S lenses: 18-55/3.5-5.6 IS and the 55-250/4-5.6 IS are "not compatible" with the 30D. Which means to me, that sometime around January 2007, Canon changed something with their lenses. Something was added to all new lenses beginning this year that may have more features than we know about - all of the lenses above were released this year, and for some reason, the 30D and 5D are missing something that the newer bodies have that utilizes that information. The older bodies won't even work with this feature, except for all of the 1D series. But no 20D, no 300D, 350D.... Okay Roger all you had to do was read the next page. Dur. The new RAW files are reporting shooting distance information. The older cameras with compatible lenses report the distance as infinity no matter what. Interesting.
And yet TTL-II uses distance information from USM lenses starting at least with the 30D? I dunno.. this still doesn't sound right. Older cameras with newer lenses aren't able to record the required distance info, but they can with older lenses? Or do older lenses not require it? It's not of immediate relevance to me, I don't have any of the newer lenses, but.. I'm getting sick and tired of these nonsensical requirements.
