    The L Lenses:

    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/about_canon?pageKeyCode=pressreldetail&docId=0901e024801e8289

    8-15mm f/4L Fisheye
    70-300 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM ; (Est price: $1500)
    300 f/2.8L II IS
    400 f/2.8L II IS
And they revamped their 1.4 and 2.0TCs

Part of the press release mentions that they are changing the shade of white in all new L lenses manufactured.

Canon also announces the 60D, which is the first of the XXD models to leave CF and require an SD/SDHC/SDXC card.

    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/about_canon?pageKeyCode=pressreldetail&docId=0901e024801e8288

    18mp (same as the others)
9 AF points, all cross type
    Articulating LCD screen
    5.3fps
    1080p video like the 5DMk2

Option to create smaller JPGs in camera while leaving the original size intact. ; I'm guessing that if you get the wireless grip, at one point soon, there will be an upload to YouTube and Facebook option based on the language in the press release. ; Correction: ; There is no wireless grip option planned for this camera according to Chuck Westfall via Rob Galbraith. ; Which makes NO sense if you are creating media sizes for social networking.....

    Also, new artsy filters:
The Soft Focus effect filter helps dramatize an image and smooth over shiny reflections.
The Grainy Black and White filter can give a different nostalgic perspective to any shot.
Canon's "Toy Camera" filter deliberately adds vignetting and color shift for a creative option when shooting a colorful scene.
Users can also make a scene appear like a small-scale model, simulating the look from a tilt-shift lens, with Canon's Miniature Effect filter, great when shooting any scene from a high vantage point.

I think the biggest surprise is the move away from CF - while the new consumer standard is SD, the speeds of the cards are no where close to CF.

nothing to get me too exciting in the lens lineup (Bigma OS is an amazing lens). ; the specs on the 60d are impressive but it's going to be hard to undo the goodwill that the 7d has garnered so far. ; Once Canon makes an 18-200 f/4 L IS with a black finish (yeah, big bucks), I will be all over that one.

I don't see Canon ever making an L with a black finish. ; And, based on the talk when the 28-300 Nikon was leaked (it was 18-200 FX originally, then I think someone realized that the rumor was leaked by someone who was told...we've made the 18-200 but for FX, which is 28-300) getting an FX from 18mm to 200mm is practically impossible physics wise - mainly because of the size of the elements to get 18mm on FX.

Wait, did you mean an EF-S 18-200? ; (again, even though the 17-55 2.8 IS is L quality, they will probably never label an EF-S lens as an L)

Fisheye looks interesting, but that's about it for me. ; No new 50 1.4 announced which was rumored.

    Maybe more announcements at Photokina?

    Canon has made a bunch of black L lenses (24-105, ; 24-70, ; primes) ; ; ;
    I didn't mean ef-s because I don't have an ef-s camera. ;

Dur I forgot about those lenses. ; The fact that the 70-300L is white even though it's based on the 70-300 is what threw me off.

As to EF-S, okay - I think it's going to take a optical miracle for something like that to work - maybe they'll figure out a better microlens that will accept photons at other than right angles, just like film used to.

Don't hold your breath, Tim. It took Canon the better part of a decade to come out with their own superzoom lenses (they lost a LOT of sales to Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina during those years!), so my guess is that it till be a long time before they consider making a fixed aperture superzoom that qualifies for the L designation. When they do, it'll probably be the best lens on the planet, but it will require a second mortgage to afford it.

    Better start saving now.

Meanwhile, I'll be enjoying my 18-200 F/3.5-5.6 EF-S IS. I picked it up earlier this year; at $600 it's the most expensive lens I've ever bought. But it's phenomenal! It's the best lens I've ever owned. Sharp as a razor, quiet motors (no USM, nobody seems to know why), quick to focus, almost no vignetting or chromatic abberations... I can't WAIT to take this lens to WDW next month!

I am hoping that the release of this helps reduce the 7D price, but I am sure that this won't impact it too much.

EDIT: ; Unless I am missing something, the 7D and the 60D seem to be almost identical. ; Can someone split hairs for me, and piont out why I would need to spend another $600 on the 7D? ; I might have missed something in the comparrison view on the Canon site, but I don't think so.

I think the biggest differences will be in build - the 7D is a full mag alloy body and weather-sealed, versus the 60D's plastic body...and probably not weathersealed. ; The viewfinder too - the 7D is bigger and brighter - a 100% 1x pentaprism vs 96% .95x. ; The continuous frame rate of the 7D is 8fps vs 5.3fps on the 60D. ; Also, I believe the 7D has multi-flash wireless support, and the 60D does not. ; There may be other little unknowns - like time lapse ability/computer controlled shooting/external monitor support, and various changes to information displays. ; Otherwise in other areas, they should come out about equal.

Are any of these really worth the additional $$ though? ; I mean we are talking about $600!

Does the 60D have micro AF adjustment? ; That may be another difference.

Interesting on the 300mm IS f/2.8 II - Perhaps It will drive down the price of the Mark I lens? ; Of course, if I bought the Mark I, I'd only want to buy a Mark II.

I wonder what improvements they are making on the teleconverters.

I found this blog with a discussion about the camera's and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were. ; I am still trying to see if it is really worth the additional $600 to get the 7D over the 60D now that they seem so alike.

    http://dojoklo.wordpress.com/2010/08/26/httpdojoklo-wordpress-com20100503canon-7d-vs-5d-vs-50d-part-iicanon_5d_vs_7d_vs_60d_vs_50d_vs_550d/

Here is another with a side by side. ; I see that the body is different and the FPS is different, but the buffer is one shot bigger on the 60D than the 7D. ; I'm so confused. ; :)

I think the buffer in the 7d vs 60d will be minimal if you use a really fast Compact FLash card because they write faster than SD cards.
The 7d has better body and build, also it has AF Micro adjust, which the 60d doesn't. ; Then their is the built in flash controller of the 7d lacking in the 60d.
also the 7d uses Compact Flash card which removes the option for EyeFi cards.

The differences seem to be minimal, if it were me I would go with the 60d and use the money I would have saved on other gear

That was kind of what I was starting to think. ; I mean to spend an additional $600 on other items, like a grip or lenses, or cards, or whatever, seems to make a little more sense to me at this time. ; I might be missing something still, but that is how I am leaning at the moment.

Just remember you will have to buy all new memory cards for the 60D. ; I'm still shocked at Canon's decision to do that.

Yeah I was looking at that, and the new cards at B&H don't seem to be all that cost prohibitive. ; They have 16gb cards for $35-$50. ; Costco usually runs some good specials on cards also.
